Petrusbrunnen

Petrusbrunnen rises at the Hauptmarkt in Germany from a hexagonal basin, with bold Mannerist sculpture and vivid colours. Saint Peter stands nearly life-size above the square. Hans Rupprecht Hoffmann created the ensemble in 1595, surrounding the patron saint with four figures representing cardinal virtues. Justice carries both a sword and scales. Strength rests beside a broken column, while Moderation balances water with wine and Wisdom holds a mirror and snake.

Lions release water from their mouths, while putti add dolphins, geese, and playful monkey faces to the carving. Carved coats of arms connect the monument with civic, episcopal, and territorial authority. Latin inscriptions praise wisdom and moderation, while bright paint and partial gilding once enriched the stone. The basin first supplied drinking water before technology made the structure ornamental. Multiple restorations renewed its forms and colours after it survived the Second World War.

Each year, a bouquet crowns Saint Peter during the old-town festival. The wheelchair-accessible setting keeps the figures and symbols within reach of the market square.
