Hauptmarkt
In Germany, Hauptmarkt gathers streets around a lively square lined with facades from Renaissance, Baroque, and later periods. Pointed arches, golden stars, oxen, and carved knights give each side a different detail. At the centre, the market cross rises on a Roman column dating to 958. Today, a copy of the cross stands there.
The Petrusbrunnen stands at the southern edge, where four female figures represent justice, strength, temperance, and wisdom. Putti and animals fill the space between them. Built in the late sixteenth century, the fountain once supplied water to the square. St. Gangolf looks onto it through a Baroque gate.
Carvings on the cross show the Lamb of God, Saint Peter, and a sundial above four old holes. Those four visible holes once held shackles. Beyond the square, the small Judenpforte leads towards the former Jewish quarter. Festivals and local traditions still animate the space.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Trier. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
