Edificio con tre esedre

Edificio con Tre Esedre stands within Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli as a distinctive example of Roman architecture. Its central square courtyard contains three semicircular exedrae. Semicircular porticoes surround these spaces, while fountains and architectural details shape the courtyard’s formal arrangement. Marble reliefs remain visible in the main hall. The building formed a vestibule for the winter palace, identified in the projection as Edificio con Peschiera. Two distinct wings divide the structure into different areas. One wing opens more broadly, while the other includes heated rooms decorated with marble for an elaborate interior. A rectangular fountain clearly marked the principal entrance. Visitors then entered a columned atrium, and statues accompanied the fountain at this threshold. The triple-exedra design also hosted official summer banquets in rooms oriented towards the north. Together, the courtyard, fountains, porticoes and marble elements present Hadrianic architectural planning through a carefully arranged complex.
