Statuia Sf. Gheorghe

Statuia Sf. Gheorghe stands in Timișoara’s Piața Sfântul Gheorghe, a square with a long architectural history. Silvia Radu created this bronze sculpture for Timișoara. It shows Saint George confronting the dragon, a familiar subject in Christian iconography and Romanian sculpture. Ștefan Călărășanu designed the pedestal beneath the statue. The work connects religious imagery with Timișoara’s memory of the events it commemorates. Piața Sfântul Gheorghe is one of Timișoara’s oldest squares.

Its layered past includes a Jesuit church, a theological seminary, historic shops, and the city’s first horse-drawn tramway. The former church also carried Saint George’s name. Buildings around the square recall education, commerce, and changing urban life across several centuries. Radu’s monumental practice brings classical forms together with contemplative elements from Western and Byzantine traditions. Children sometimes offer the dragon sandwiches or water. Local memory gives the statue a place in daily life, with visitors named George or Gheorghe touching it for luck. The sculpture therefore links bronze, faith, public space, and Timișoara’s recent history.
