Sinagoga din Cetate
Sinagoga din Cetate stands in Cetate, Timișoara’s historic core, as a Jewish place of worship with an eclectic façade and Moorish details. Viennese architect Karl Schumann designed it between 1863 and 1865. Two octagonal towers carry onion-shaped domes, while a round stained-glass window and yellow-red brickwork mark the main façade. Blue and black glazed ceramic outlines its architectural details.
Built for the Neolog Jewish community, the building provided 744 seats, arranging 424 for men below and 320 for women above. Community members financed, organized, and supervised the construction. An oriental cornice crowns the Torah ark, while Alhambra-inspired columns and carved wooden benches extend the interior’s decorative scheme. Marble plaques commemorate leaders and important community events.
Following extensive restoration work, the building reopened to the public for worship and cultural events in May 2022. An organ accompanied the cantor during its services.
