Palatul Baroc

Palatul Baroc stands on the southern side of Piața Unirii, in Timișoara’s historic centre. The palace forms part of the square’s Central European Baroque setting. Its ground floor once held administrative offices, while officials lived on the upper floors.

Construction began by joining the mining office and military treasury, then raising them into a governor’s residence. By 1752, the building had two upper floors, rear stables, and warehouses. In 1754, Count Vilana Perlas became its first civil governor and occupied the upper rooms. A 1774 extension added a second courtyard, reached through a vaulted corridor. Later changes removed much of the original relief decoration and installed rectangular window frames.

Today, the National Museum of Art Timișoara fills these historic rooms with local, national, and international collections. A preserved mascaron from the original western portal survives as a window. Two griffin-shaped iron flag holders still mark the building’s corners.
