Fântâna cu pești

Fântâna cu pești stands at the centre of Victory Square, one of Timișoara’s major public spaces. The fountain is also known as the artesian fountain. Built in 1957, it has a five-pointed star shape that gives the square a clear geometric feature. The water rises from this artesian fountain. Victory Square was formerly called Opera Square and places the fountain among landmarks that include the Opera House and Metropolitan Cathedral. The Opera House stands north, while the Metropolitan Cathedral stands south. Another monument in the square is Lupoaica cu puii, a replica of Rome’s Lupa Capitolina. The fountain forms a central point among these public landmarks. Its star design, artesian water, and fish motif connect a mid-twentieth-century work with Timișoara’s historic civic setting. Victory Square gives the fountain its wider urban context. The open square also contains monuments and buildings that show different periods of Timișoara’s public architecture. The fountain anchors this setting with its five corners.
