Domul Sfântul Gheorghe - Catedrala romano-catolică

Domul Sfântul Gheorghe - Catedrala romano-catolică rises in central Timișoara as a Baroque cathedral surrounded by historic buildings. Its compact square form reflects towers kept to 35.5 metres, partly to reduce costs and partly to limit visibility during a period of invasion threats.

Construction began in 1736 under Emperor Charles VI and ended in 1774, following plans by Viennese court architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. A double-cross floor plan shapes the interior, where Viennese Rococo details frame a marble high altar and Saint George’s battle with the dragon. Michael Angelo Unterberger painted the votive scene, which later received conservation, retouching and protective varnish.

Carl Leopold Wegenstein built the organ in 1908, and the building’s acoustics continue to suit organ performances. Hungarian, German and Romanian services reflect Timișoara’s multilingual character, while the crypt holds bishops, canons, fortress commanders and nobles. The clearest detail to remember is the gilded company around Saint George: saints and angels gather above the altar beneath the restored painting.
