Bastionul Maria Therezia
Bastionul Maria Therezia stands in central Timișoara as the largest surviving section of the former fortress walls. Built between 1730 and 1735, it covers about 1.7 hectares. Thick walls, arches, and a passage through the structure reveal its eighteenth-century military design.
The old fortress once occupied about 20 hectares and used three concentric defensive rings. Most of those fortifications disappeared, leaving this bastion among the surviving fragments. Other wall remains stand in the Botanical Park and along Calea Al Ioan Cuza. Today, restaurants, bars, a nightclub, and a library occupy its spaces. Two permanent National Museum of Banat exhibitions examine information and communication technology, alongside violin and local ethnographic displays.
The Banat Village Museum also presents its ethnographic section within the historic structure. As you pass through or around it, daily movement meets nearly three centuries of architectural history. Its walls connect Habsburg-era fortification with contemporary cultural and commercial life in Timișoara.
