Mariä Himmelfahrt
Mariä Himmelfahrt stands in the heart of Thannhausen as a Baroque church shaped by local craftsmanship and artistic work. Johann Kaspar Radmiller designed it in 1742. Inside, the church forms a Baroque hall with detailed frescoes by J. Christ and religious themes. Those frescoes give the interior its painted focus.
Franz Xaver Abele supplied interchangeable paintings for the main altar, while Konrad Huber created works for the side altars. Their paintings place devotional subjects within the church’s architectural setting. Ferdinand Zech crafted the extraordinary choir stall, showing the cabinetmaking tradition associated with Thannhausen. The choir stall is a distinct work of local craftsmanship.
B. Pröbstl built the church organ in 1800, and Sandtner expanded it in 1966. Its mechanical action contributes a distinctive sound to the church. The building combines fresco painting, altar art, woodwork, and organ building in one interior. These features connect Mariä Himmelfahrt with Thannhausen’s cultural and artistic heritage.
