Ermita de San José de Las Longueras

The Ermita de San José de Las Longueras stands beside a small plaza and short flight of steps in Spain. Its compact rectangular body follows a mudéjar plan, with one nave and a right-hand sacristy. Dressed stone defines the façade, corners, walls, and the building’s rugged outline. Above, a two-pitch timber roof carries pairs and boarding that form an artesonado ceiling. The gabled front has a lintelled opening with a cornice, while narrow splayed slits punctuate the side walls. A stone bell gable crowns the chapel with one opening.

Juan del Castillo rebuilt the hermitage after a storm in 1780, preserving its simple structural language. Behind the chapel, traces of an old sugar mill connect it with a wider archaeological landscape. The building remains a cultural monument and opens for worship during certain local celebrations. Look closely at the single bell opening: it gathers the stonework, timber, and history into one small detail.
