Casa-Museo León y Castillo

Casa-Museo León y Castillo occupies the birthplace and adjoining house of the León y Castillo brothers in Spain. Two compact manor houses form a clear example of Canary Islands Mudéjar architecture, with arched openings, inward patios and wooden balconies. The cool interior spaces contrast with the rhythmic façade, whose arches give the ensemble its distinctive appearance.

The Cabildo converted the birthplace into a museum after restoration in 1953, and it opened officially in 1954. Letters, official papers, furniture and personal belongings preserve the world of the Marqués del Muni. Nearby, paintings by Spanish artists accompany original plans and croquis for Puerto de la Luz, drawn by engineer Juan de León y Castillo. Together, these materials connect family history with the design of an island harbour.

Eight permanent exhibition rooms share the building with a specialised contemporary-history library, a hemeroteca and an archive. An expansion completed in 2006 strengthened its cultural role through courses, workshops, seminars and guided historical walks. One detail stays especially vivid: the original harbour drawings show how lines on paper gave shape to Puerto de la Luz.
