The Republican Children’s Library in Tashkent combines reading, study, creativity, and cultural activity within a modern public space. Its historic building has shaped the cityscape since the late nineteenth century.

The Vadyayev brothers built the mansion in the 1880s, and the city acquired it in 1893. Ivan Markevich later designed an added section.

The building housed the Tashkent City Duma and public assembly before becoming a children’s library in 1965. Restoration from 2020 preserved historical features while adding contemporary spaces.

The restoration uncovered mid-twentieth-century wall murals, while mezzanines and an amphitheatre support the library’s varied programme. Children aged three to sixteen form its particular focus.

Reading rooms sit alongside children’s co-working areas, laboratories, a digital-content studio, and spaces for workshops and film screenings. Modular furniture includes adaptations for people with disabilities.

Much of this furniture comes from Uzbekistan, linking local production with the library’s accessible interior. The collection brings Uzbek and international children’s literature together.

Electronic cards manage registration, lending, and returns across the library’s book service. Book clubs, hobby groups, masterclasses, lectures, and community meetings extend its role beyond reading.

Adults can also use this cultural centre for learning, connection, and shared public life in Tashkent. The library gives a historic building new purpose through books, learning, and public culture.
