Kaatje
Kaatje stands on the Kurpromenade in Westerland, Sylt, as a retired maritime rescue boat beside the North Sea. The seven-metre vessel gives you a clear view of the equipment once used in German coastal rescue work.
Schweers-Werft built the boat in Bardenfleth in 1980 for the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger. It first served as the daughter boat of the rescue cruiser Eiswette, then worked from Fedderwardersiel and Maasholm before leaving service in 2000. Radio systems, an echo sounder, radar, GPS and a salvage pump show the technology carried aboard during those operations.
Its Frisian name points to the boat’s connection with Germany’s coast. You can still see the compact hull and rescue equipment where maritime service meets Westerland’s promenade.
