Stadtgarten Stuttgart
Stadtgarten Stuttgart is a three-hectare park beside the Stadtmitte campus of the University of Stuttgart. Linden, chestnut, and poplar trees line paths near the Liederhalle, university library, and Max-Kade-Weg. A playground, multi-sport court, and open areas for jogging, yoga, picnics, and relaxation shape the visitor experience.
Its history reaches back to the 1760s, when a linden avenue first connected the Liederhalle area with the university library. Duke Karl Eugen expanded it in 1787 into a fourfold avenue, and the grounds hosted Württemberg’s first horticulture exhibition in 1870. Flower beds, water features, and a music pavilion marked that event, while a later palm house hosted concerts and dances. A covered open-air stage followed after the First World War, accommodating 1,500 spectators.
Bomb damage led to major rebuilding during the 1950s, while a 1960s redesign added about 6,000 square metres. An underpass links the green space with Hoppenlaufriedhof, and sculptures in marble, sandstone, and modern materials occupy the grounds. A memorial honours resistance fighter Lilo Herrmann, while wheelchair access and the playground make the park practical for families.
