Staatstheater Stuttgart
Staatstheater Stuttgart is a theatre complex in Stuttgart, Germany, comprising three main venues. They are Oper Stuttgart, Stuttgarter Ballett, and Schauspiel Stuttgart.
Max Littmann designed the complex, which originally served the Kingdom of Württemberg as a royal theatre. Construction took place between 1909 and 1912. The original arrangement included a Grosses Haus and a Kleines Haus for performances. The Grosses Haus contains the opera house. Bombing destroyed the Kleines Haus during World War II, while the Grosses Haus survived. Hans Volkart designed the rebuilt Kleines Haus. The new Kleines Haus opened in 1962, adding a postwar chapter to the complex’s architectural history.
A major restoration followed from 1982 to 1984. That work aimed to return the buildings to their original condition after decades of theatrical use. The buildings were renamed Opernhaus and Schauspielhaus in 2001. The Staatstheater Stuttgart connects opera, ballet, and drama within Stuttgart’s cultural heritage. The complex belongs to the cultural fabric of Baden-Württemberg. Its architecture reflects royal origins, wartime survival, reconstruction, and restoration across changing theatre names. The venue is wheelchair accessible for visitors attending its three main artistic offerings.
