Seewasserwerk Hasenberg

Seewasserwerk Hasenberg stands in Stuttgart as a preserved historical waterworks, with architecture shaped by practical water supply. Its caretaker’s house, measuring station, filter basin, and pump station remain almost unchanged. Originally, park-lake water passed through the filter basins before reaching households as cooking water. From the 1920s, the works also treated drinking water for the city.

The royal building office of the fountain community initiated construction, following designs by building director Karl Ehmann. Construction began in 1874, while Stuttgart took official ownership in 1879. Land, iron, and labour costs rose unexpectedly beyond the approved budget. In 1933, Gallenklinge waterworks assumed the drinking-water task. The installation also maintained firefighting water capacity for Stuttgart’s fire department.

Today, the reservoir serves Stuttgart’s city centre and the Stuttgart-West district. Four surviving components show how one site carried water from park lakes into the city’s supply system.
