Schweinemuseum
The Schweinemuseum in Stuttgart presents the art and cultural history of pigs through a privately run collection. An Art Nouveau building in Stuttgart-Gaisburg houses the museum. Albert Pantle designed the building, which once served as a slaughterhouse’s administrative office. Erika Wilhelmer began the collection in Bad Wimpfen. Its themed rooms connect pigs with butchery, hunting, art, mythology, luck, prosperity, excess, and greed. Piggy banks, toys, and lucky charms show pigs in everyday culture. The exhibits follow the animal through symbolism, popular objects, and representations shaped by different traditions. A permanent exhibition anchors the museum’s wider display. Special exhibitions add artistic and cultural perspectives, including themes associated with World Pig Day and the Chinese Year of the Pig. The restaurant serves German cuisine within the same building. Children encounter a subject that appears in toys, charms, art, mythology, and stories about luck. Stuttgart-Gaisburg places the collection within a former industrial setting.
