Schiff im Weinberg

Schiff im Weinberg is a kindergarten in Stuttgart’s Luginsland district, set on a hillside among vineyards and post-war housing. Günter Behnisch shaped the building as a playful architectural vessel, with a pointed bow, central flagpole and round porthole-like windows. Its southeastern orientation fills the interior with natural light.

The design grew from a 1975 idea to convert an old Neckar barge into a kindergarten. Behnisch revived that ship motif for the Luginsland project, completed between 1987 and 1990. Sloping walls create small corners beneath the stairs, including spaces that children can reach and explore. A wooden skeleton and corrugated-iron roof give the structure its distinctive material character while reducing construction costs.

A gangway leads into the kindergarten, where round windows let children wave to their parents. The cultural monument received the Hugo Häring Prize in 1991 and the German Timber Construction Award in 1992.
