Landesmuseum Württemberg

Landesmuseum Württemberg stands in Stuttgart’s Old Castle, presenting Württemberg’s history through archaeology, art, and cultural history. The Old Castle provides its principal setting in Stuttgart.

Its collections began in the sixteenth century as the Kunstkammer, an art and curiosity cabinet belonging to Württemberg’s dukes and kings. King William I formally established the museum in 1862. Eight divisions bring together Legendary Masterpieces, archaeology, art and cultural history, and the Museum of Ancient Art.

The Württemberg crown jewels, medieval art, modern glass painting, and archaeological treasures give the collections their broad historical range. Further holdings occupy the nearby granary, the cellar of the New Castle, and Waldenbuch Castle. Junges Schloss adds interactive exhibits for children, while branches across Württemberg explore toys, sleighs, carriages, and playing cards.
