Alter Friedhof
Alter Friedhof lies in Stuttgart’s Vaihingen district, where graves, trees and quiet paths create a setting for remembrance. The cemetery opened in 1873. Its grounds cover about 3.2 hectares and hold a war memorial created by sculptor Christian Aeckerlin in 1926. The memorial honours people who died in war.
Vaihingen reaches back to around 1100, giving the cemetery a place within a much older local history. The community joined the Kingdom of Württemberg in the early nineteenth century. After becoming part of Stuttgart, Vaihingen grew into the city’s largest district by area and its second-largest by population. Christian Aeckerlin’s 1926 memorial provides the clearest historical detail among the graves and pathways.
