Alte Kirche
Alte Kirche stands in Stuttgart-Hedelfingen as a historic church whose origins reach back to the thirteenth century. Built as a fortified church, it offered worship and refuge during conflicts between Esslingen and Württemberg.
Fighting heavily damaged the building in 1449, and rebuilding began in 1468 with a Gothic choir and sacristy. Inside, frescoes show apostles, prophets, church fathers, the Last Judgment, and the Ten Commandments. Reformation-era coverings hid these paintings until their rediscovery in the mid-twentieth century, while restoration work in the 1950s and 1990s helped preserve them.
A two-manual organ built by Friedrich Lieb in 2005 accompanies its present role as a cemetery chapel. Baden-Württemberg’s heritage authority recognises the church as a cultural monument.
