Chapelle de Garnison
The Chapelle de Garnison stands on Broglie Square in France, with sober, solid lines that define its architectural presence. The chapel remains a quiet landmark beside the square.
Built in the middle of the sixteenth century, it originally provided a place of worship and calm for soldiers. It began as a military chapel for soldiers. After the Second World War, destruction of the city’s main synagogue left the Jewish community without its spiritual home. The chapel then welcomed Jewish worship for several years.
Services and celebrations continued within these walls until a new synagogue was built for the community. The building later returned to its military use. Its history joins soldiers, Jewish worship, loss, refuge, and changing communal needs within one architectural setting. Stone and timber carry this layered memory through the chapel. The building’s sober form frames a story of resilience, shared space, and religious continuity at Broglie Square.
