Esplanade
Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay stands beside the mouth of the Singapore River, where two rounded buildings shape Singapore’s cultural waterfront. Their spiky glass exteriors balance broad outward views with protection from the tropical sun. Inside, a concert hall and theatre host indie bands, award-winning stage productions, drama and other performances.
The cultural centre grew from Singapore’s 1989 call for a suitable home for the performing arts. Singapore Arts Centre began overseeing its development in 1992. Construction started in 1996, finished in 2001, and the completed venue opened officially in October 2002. DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners created the design together.
Triangulated glass elements and sunshades cover the two rounded space frames, giving the buildings their distinctive durian-like silhouette. Bars and restaurants add to the setting, including Michelin-starred Labyrinth. Alongside its stages, this waterfront landmark gives Singapore a memorable meeting point for architecture, food and live performance.
