Edificio del Banco de España stands in Seville as a classicist building facing Plaza de San Francisco. Antonio Illanes del Río designed its rectangular plan. Its limestone façade presents a recessed centre, side pilasters, an imposing cornice, and a solid parapet above. Marble details frame the entrance and its heraldic decoration. Decorative ironwork carries Seville’s NO8DO emblem, while Spain’s coat of arms appears above the doorway. The inscription Banco de España marks the frieze. The architect’s classicist approach contrasts with the regionalist architecture that shaped much of Seville during the period. Antonio Palacios strongly influenced the building’s decorative language. The main façade rises above the plaza, with smaller windows lighting and ventilating the semi-basement along the sides. Fuente de Mercurio stands before the main façade. The building occupies a former theatre site and includes secure spaces adapted to the bank’s practical needs. Its monumental presence anchors this busy Sevillian setting.
