Wasserturm

Wasserturm Neumühle rises 22.5 metres above Weinberg in Schwerin, the city’s highest point at 86.2 metres. Carl Benduhn designed the tower in neo-Gothic style.

Built in 1889, the tower marked the beginning of Schwerin’s central water-supply system. From 1890, Neumühle drew nearby lake water, filtered it through sand and distributed it as drinking water. Pumps sent water into an underground reservoir or directly into the tower, creating pressure for the city’s higher districts.

An Intze I tank, developed by Otto Intze in 1883, forms the tower’s central engineering feature. The underground reservoir gave way to larger reservoirs at the waterworks in 1944. Groundwater joined lake water from 1948, while Gosewinkel began operating in 1954. Lake-water extraction ended by 1989, yet the tower still helps balance pressure through modern pumps.
