Schweriner Schloss
Schweriner Schloss rises on an island in Lake Schwerin, within Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Nineteenth-century towers and ornate façades create a historicist palace shaped by French Renaissance castles.
Its story reaches back to 973, when the Obotrites established a fort here. Germanic nobles led by Henry the Lion attacked it in 1160, while later dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg developed the stronghold into a residence. Duke John Albert I introduced Renaissance changes, before Gottfried Semper and Friedrich August Stüler guided the nineteenth-century reconstruction. Today, the building houses the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament and a museum, while cultural events animate its rooms.
In 2023, Schweriner Schloss joined the UNESCO World Heritage List. Petermännchen, a ghost in seventeenth-century clothing, is said to wander through the halls.
