Propsteikirche Sankt Anna

Propsteikirche Sankt Anna in Schwerin serves as the mother church for Catholic churches across Mecklenburg. The church carries a designation for wheelchair accessibility.

Carl Theodor Severin designed the classical interior, whose surviving features include the pulpit, confessionals, baptismal font, and organ case. An older altar stands in the lower church. Paul Brandenburg created the main altar, ambo, tabernacle, hanging cross, and bronze relief commemorating Niels Stensen. A small lower church is dedicated to Saint Ansgar. Gerhard Böhm’s organ represents the Gotha workshop tradition with stops, manuals, and pedal. Saint Anne gives the church its name and dedication. The church also houses a historical library, where books from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries support exhibitions from its collections. Memorial plaques recall Niels Stensen inside and outside. The building emerged in the late eighteenth century under master mason Cornelius Christopher Barca and received a later apse and sacristy wing. Its Catholic community has roots in Schwerin’s seventeenth-century history.
