Lenin Denkmal
Lenin Denkmal stands in Schwerin’s Großer Dreesch, where a bronze figure rises three and a half metres above the surrounding area. Estonian sculptor Jaak Soans created the statue, which was unveiled in 1985 during Schwerin’s 825th anniversary.
The monument commemorates Lenin’s land decree of 1917, which led to large landowners’ expropriation in the Soviet occupation zone. Its setting once carried the name Leninallee, although the street name changed in 1990. Günter Grass’s novella Im Krebsgang also describes the statue casting its shadow across the area.
Protests and arguments about removal or preservation have made the bronze figure a focus of historical memory. A plaque supplies historical context, but vandalism has affected that marker. The monument remains one of the last of its kind in the region, confronting you with competing views of Soviet influence and past injustice.
