Tabaksweiher
Tabaksweiher lies in Sankt Arnual, Saarbrücken, where the pond marks the entrance to the Almet recreational area. Small gardens and horse paddocks shape the surrounding landscape. Walking paths lead around the water, while a restaurant terrace occupies its short northeastern shore. The setting offers a quiet nature break close to the city.
The pond took its present form around 1600 and originally formed the lower of two ponds. In 1831, a tobacco mill rose beside it. Workers processed tobacco from the Palatinate and Virginia, mixing it with rose water to produce snuff. Snuff production ended around 1860, when the business was no longer profitable.
The mill building later became a residence, and it has housed a restaurant since 1920. Built in the first half of the nineteenth century, the protected monument preserves that industrial connection. Its northeastern terrace reaches directly over the water, joining the historic building to the walking landscape.
