Schlosskirche
Schlosskirche stands in Alt-Saarbrücken on the left bank of the Saar, carrying centuries of religious and architectural history. It now houses a museum for Christian sacred art.
The site began as a chapel in Saarbrücken’s old castle during the eleventh century for the count’s court. Medieval records first mention the chapel in the thirteenth century. Later rebuilding produced a Gothic church, completed around the beginning of the sixteenth century and altered through Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The church once honoured Saint Nicholas of Myra. A later altar honoured Saint James the Greater, while earlier traditions connected the chapel with Saint George and Saint Margaret. The Reformation changed the church’s religious role in the sixteenth century.
The building also hosted the predecessor of today’s Ludwigsgymnasium and suffered wartime damage before restoration preserved its historical importance. The A620 removed houses that once closed the church towards the Saar.
