Schloss Halberg
Schloss Halberg rises on Halberg mountain near Saarbrücken as a neo-Gothic castle built between 1877 and 1880. Edwin Oppler and Ferdinand Schorbach designed it for industrialist Carl Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg. Yellow Jaumont limestone from Maizières-lès-Metz forms the façade.
Before this castle, Louis Crato, Count of Nassau-Saarbrücken, commissioned the small baroque pleasure palace Monplaisir there. French Revolutionary troops destroyed the palace in 1793. Eduard Neide designed the surrounding landscape park, while Heinrich Siesmayer carried out the work. An orangery and Chinese houses once enriched the earlier park in the Chinoiserie style.
During the Second World War, the building served as a military post for the Saarbrücken anti-aircraft regiment. After the war, the French military governor lived there, and many neo-Gothic decorations disappeared. In 1959, Saarland Broadcasting Corporation acquired the complex, while new pavilion buildings replaced several demolished outbuildings. A French-German restaurant now serves classic French cuisine inside the castle.
