Svētā Pētera baznīca
Svētā Pētera baznīca rises beside Town Hall Square in Riga’s Old Town, near the House of the Blackheads. It is a Lutheran parish church dedicated to Saint Peter. Medieval masonry, three aisles, vaulted ceilings, and a thirty-metre central section shape the interior.
First mentioned in 1209, the building preserves traces of a thirteenth-century middle section in its nave walls and pillars. Johannes Rumeschottel completed the sanctuary in 1419. Late fifteenth-century rebuilding joined these parts into a basilica, while Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque work accumulated through later reconstruction. Fire, lightning, war, and artillery repeatedly changed the structure. Restoration rebuilt the tower with a metal frame and an elevator after wartime destruction.
From the viewing platform at seventy-two metres, you can see Riga’s Old Town, the Daugava, modern districts, and the port. An hour hand marks the tower clock. The gilded rooster weighs 158 kilograms, while a 1596 bronze candelabrum and Roland statue remain inside.
