Piemineklis Mihailam Tālam
The Monument to Mikhail Tal stands in Vērmana Garden, Riga, as a 2.8-metre sculpture honouring Latvia’s eighth world chess champion. Two granite blocks, one light and one dark, form a chessboard contrast around a bronze bust emerging from their vertical gap.
Oļegs Skarainis created the sculpture with architects Guntis Sakne and Liene Šterna, and Riga unveiled it during the city’s 800th-anniversary celebrations in 2001. The Latvian inscriptions identify Mihails Tāls and record his world championship from 1960 to 1961, while the park connects his international career with local chess life. Amateur players gathered here from the 1950s to the 1980s, making this setting part of Riga’s chess tradition.
The clearest detail is the bronze face between pale and dark granite, like a player appearing between opposing squares. The sculpture is wheelchair accessible.
