Latvijas Universitāte
Latvijas Universitāte stands in Riga as a public research university, with an architectural setting rooted in Latvia’s academic history. Riga Polytechnic once occupied this main building. The university brings together higher education, science, and culture in a historic centre of Latvian intellectual life.
Founded in 1919 as the Higher School of Latvia, it grew from Riga Polytechnic, established in 1862. Chemist Paul Walden served as its first rector. In 1923, its constitution was approved, marking a new chapter in national academic life. Several universities later emerged from its academic structure after the Second World War.
Faculties span medicine, life sciences, technology, economics, law, education, psychology, and the humanities. Research reaches mathematics, computer science, and satellite geodesy. Student life includes choirs, orchestras, dance groups, and a theatre. Women’s choir Minjona offers one memorable glimpse of the cultural life gathered around these academic buildings.
