St. Nikolaus
St. Nikolaus is a church in Germany, shaped by Romanesque, Baroque and twentieth-century architecture. Thick walls and a prominent tower preserve the outline of its thirteenth-century Romanesque hall.
The original layout included an eastern tower, a transept and a recessed choir. In 1905, the choir and transept moved west, while the interior received Baroque forms and richer decoration. The present tower replaced an unsafe predecessor in 1937, following a design by Heinrich Hauberrisser.
A cemetery wall surrounds the grounds with reliefs and gravestones from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. Inside, a Binder & Siemann organ from 1896 remains the workshop’s last mechanical cone-chest instrument after twentieth-century modifications. Five bells cast in 1946 weigh nearly 4,500 kilograms together.
