Kisha e Shën Gjergjit
Kisha e Shën Gjergjit serves as the main cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Raška and Prizren. Construction ran from 1856 until completion in 1887. Its carved stone walls support a pitched lead roof, while a brick bell tower added in 1903 completes the exterior. The interior includes an altar, nave, narthex, gallery, and apse. The cathedral replaced older churches after the medieval Church of the Holy Mother of God became a mosque. The nearby Old Church stands beside the cathedral. The fifteenth-century church preserves seventeenth-century frescoes and once served as a Russian consulate. Unrest in 2004 badly damaged the cathedral. European Union support enabled major restoration, including new roofing, structural repairs, and work on the bell tower. Ban Ki-moon and Prince Charles visited the cathedral. Its architecture and history express Kosovo’s religious heritage and the resilience of its community. The church remains a protected religious monument.
