Xhamia e Çarshisë

Xhamia e Çarshisë stands in Prishtina’s Old Bazaar as the city’s oldest mosque. Its slender minaret rises above busy streets and the lively market surrounding it. A domed prayer space gives the building a modest form, while its stonework reflects more than five centuries of history.

Built around 1498, the mosque belongs to the Ottoman period that reshaped Kosovo’s towns. Fifteenth-century provinces, markets, taxes, and religious buildings formed the wider order around it. Craftsmen, caravanserais, traders, spices, and hammering once filled the bazaar beside the prayer space. The 1389 Battle of Kosovo preceded this transition, involving Ottoman forces and a Balkan alliance. Albanian, Serbian, and Bosniak fighters served on both sides of that conflict. Local loyalties and regional interests often mattered more than ethnic identity in the struggle.

At dawn, the call to prayer joined the sounds of trade and craft. Today, busy streets and market activity continue around the mosque. Crossing its threshold brings a clear contrast, as the surrounding noise fades. The simple dome and narrow minaret remain its most distinctive details.
