Heroinat
In Pristina, Kosovo, the Heroinat Memorial honours women who survived sexual violence during the Kosovo War of 1998 to 1999. Twenty thousand pins create the face of a woman, linking individual experiences with a shared portrait of courage.
Designed by Ilir Blakçori and unveiled on 12 June 2015, the memorial changes as you move around it. Close up, you can distinguish the separate medal-like pins, while farther away they merge into one recognisable face. This shift places the collective experience of 20,000 survivors at the centre of the work, rather than celebrating one individual hero.
The portrait recalls women whose suffering and endurance often received little recognition in Kosovo’s history.
