Wohnhaus Bonk

Wohnhaus Bonk is a detached single-family home in Bornim, a district of Potsdam, Germany. The architect Hans Scharoun designed this residential building. Its architecture reflects Scharoun’s interest in organic forms and a relationship with the surrounding environment. Wall paintings give the building a second focus for conservation. Students from Fachhochschule Potsdam examined its historical colour scheme through inventories, condition surveys and scientific analysis. Their projects examine historical plaster and painting techniques. They also develop conservation concepts for the building’s architectural surfaces. This work combines classroom knowledge with practical restoration skills. Wohnhaus Bonk serves as a case study for students and conservation professionals. Its surfaces present the challenges of preserving cultural heritage. Scharoun was also a member of Berlin’s Akademie der Künste. The house places that architectural legacy within Potsdam’s Bornim district. These studies connect architectural design with material evidence.
