Wasserholendes Mädchen
Wasserholendes Mädchen stands in Potsdam’s Marlygarten, the oldest section of Sanssouci Park. The bronze sculpture dates from 1842. Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann portrays a young girl fetching water, placing a simple everyday act beside a small goldfish pond.
Marlygarten began as a kitchen garden for the Stadtschloss under Friedrich Wilhelm I, who called it “my Marly”. Peter Joseph Lenné and his student Gustav Meyer later reshaped the grounds as a landscape garden, while paths and sculptures connect them with Sanssouci Park’s wider artistic setting. Beside the pond, the girl’s water vessel preserves the sculpture’s quiet, practical subject.
