Villa Saltzmann
Villa Saltzmann stands in Potsdam’s Babelsberg district, within the Neubabelsberg villa colony. It was built in 1890 by architects Ende & Böckmann for marine painter Carl Saltzmann. Its late nineteenth-century architecture reflects the grandeur and elegance associated with that period.
Born in Berlin in 1847, Carl Saltzmann became known for seascapes and ship paintings. He used the house as both his residence and studio, where he created many artworks. Several sea voyages with Kaiser Wilhelm II influenced the artist’s work. Saltzmann also taught painting to Prince Heinrich and his brother Wilhelm. The building later hosted art exhibitions and now stands as a historical monument. Its most personal detail remains the studio, where a painter shaped works inspired by the sea.
