Venus

The Venus statue by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle stands beside the large fountain at Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany. Carrara marble gives the figure a pale, finely worked surface within the palace gardens. The surrounding grounds belong to the UNESCO World Heritage site formed by Sanssouci Palace and its gardens.

Jean-Baptiste Pigalle created this sculpture in the mid-eighteenth century as a representation of Venus, the Roman goddess. Its decorative form reflects Rococo sculpture, an artistic style associated with the period of its creation. The work forms part of the art and sculpture displayed across the Sanssouci grounds, alongside architecture and landscaped gardens.

Frederick the Great used Sanssouci Palace as his summer residence as King of Prussia. The wheelchair-accessible setting places this marble Venus near one of Potsdam’s most prominent fountains.
