St. Peter und Paul
St. Peter und Paul is a Roman Catholic church in central Potsdam, standing at the eastern end of Brandenburger Straße. Its sixty-metre bell tower rises above the street, while Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate closes the view at the opposite end.
The present building was completed in 1870 and combines Byzantine and Romanesque elements shaped by August Stüler and Wilhelm Salzenberg. Since 1992, it has served as a provost church for Potsdam’s Catholic parish and remains wheelchair accessible. Inside, three altarpieces by Antoine Pesne, dated 1723 and 1739, stand among historic silverwork and a Crucifixion group by Peter Benckert. The church also holds a forty-one-stop Schuke organ built in 1936.
The tower follows the model of San Zeno’s campanile in Verona, giving the Potsdam streetscape its most distinctive vertical landmark.
