St. Nikolaikirche

St. Nikolaikirche stands on Potsdam’s Old Market Square as a Lutheran church with a Classicist central plan. Architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed the building for Potsdam. The church took shape in the nineteenth century, reflecting the period’s Classicist approach to sacred architecture. Its central plan organises the building’s visible interior. A prominent tambour defines the upper structure, and Ludwig Persius and Friedrich August Stüler oversaw its later addition. The tambour strengthens the church’s distinctive outer silhouette. The church belongs to the Evangelical Church in Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Upper Lusatia, connecting Potsdam with a regional Protestant structure. The church’s religious dedication honours Saint Nicholas. Wartime bombing and artillery caused serious damage, while a long reconstruction restored the building for ecclesiastical use. A later re-consecration marked its return to worship. Its recorded uses include church services and concerts, placing religious practice alongside cultural activity within the historic building. The church is wheelchair accessible for visitors.
