Römisches Bad

Römisches Bad stands in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, northeast of Charlottenhof Palace beside the artificial Machine Pond. Its buildings frame gardens, pergolas, arcades, and water. Created between 1829 and 1840, the ensemble brings Roman classicism and Italian country-villa architecture together.

Frederick William IV of Prussia commissioned a setting shaped by his longing for Italy. Karl Friedrich Schinkel designed it with his student Ludwig Persius. The gardener’s house and helpers’ house extend the composition through Italian villa forms. A small tea pavilion recalls a temple from classical antiquity. Connected garden spaces bind the buildings into one carefully arranged scene.

The central building imitates an ancient villa, although nobody used it as a bathing facility. Inside, names such as atrium and impluvium evoke Roman domestic architecture. Peter Joseph Lenné incorporated the Machine Pond into the Charlottenhof landscape, placing the ensemble directly beside its water. This imagined Roman retreat brings royal Italian enthusiasm into Potsdam’s gardens.
