Minerva
Minerva stands in the French Rondel of Sanssouci Park, below Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Germany. You see a marble figure within a formal garden setting shaped by eighteenth-century design.
The sculpture was created by François Gaspard Adam in 1760, joining twelve marble works by French artists. Low yew hedges frame each figure. The circular parterre surrounds a large fountain beneath the palace. Marble benches separate the sculptures, with additional fountains placed behind them. Sanssouci Park reflects Frederick the Great’s summer retreat and includes vineyard terraces and elegant garden rooms.
