Mars

Mars is a marble statue in Sanssouci Park, in the western suburbs of Potsdam, Germany. You find it beside the Great Fountain, within the French Rondel at the foot of Sanssouci Palace.

Twelve life-size marble figures form this circle, including eight Roman deities and the four classical elements. Wolfgang Wille created the statue as a copy of works by François Gaspard Adam and Sigisbert François Michel, completing it in the early 2000s. French artists made the original sculptures in the mid-18th century, and copies replaced them in 2002 to preserve the originals.

The arrangement stands where the park’s main axes meet, creating a balanced view around the fountain. Mars represents the Roman god of war, while the surrounding figures bring water, air, earth and fire into the same marble ensemble.
