Hofgärtnerhaus
Hofgärtnerhaus stands in the Roman Baths complex in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, beside an artificial lake. Its Italian country-villa style gives the building a distinctly southern appearance. A pergola connects it with a pavilion modelled on Greek podium temples, joining architecture and garden spaces.
Created between 1829 and 1840, the ensemble reflects Frederick William IV of Prussia’s fascination with Italy. The house itself dates from 1829 to 1830. Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Ludwig Persius shaped the buildings with Roman and antique Italian forms, while Peter Joseph Lenné designed the surrounding landscape.
An atrium, impluvium, and viridarium recreate the arrangement of a Roman villa, although the Roman Baths never served as bathing facilities. Dionysian herms, Pompeian column fragments, and a fountain add vivid Italian references among the pergolas and arcades.
