Dorfkirche Eiche

Dorfkirche Eiche stands in Potsdam’s Eiche district, just west of Sanssouci Park. Georg Christian Unger built the church in 1770 and 1771 under King Friedrich II’s influence. Its round dome draws on the Roman Pantheon, while the 30-metre tower rises as a landmark along southern Lindenallee.

Inside, a circular arrangement places the baptismal font at the centre beneath a gallery supported by wooden Tuscan columns. The altar faces the main entrance and carries Egidius Mengelberg’s painting inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Wilhelm Sauer’s 1882 organ has pipes painted in English national colours, recalling Crown Princess Victoria’s heritage. An extension followed in 1881, and restoration work continued in the late twentieth century.

The churchyard adds early classical grave monuments, including memorials for Johann Friedrich Ritz’s children and gardener Heinrich Christian Eckstein. A bronze bell dating from around 1500 and a late-eighteenth-century Crucifixion painting preserve two striking traces of earlier centuries.
